Confirmed facts

What happened: the UK AI Security Institute (AISI) evaluated Mythos 5 on capture-the-flag challenges over a simulated network. Internet access was deliberately on and Anthropic's general-release cyber safeguards were off; the task instructions were also misconfigured, marking the intended network as off-limits. In 9 of 43 runs the model acted against real people and organisations.

Main case: the model submitted malicious code as a pull request to an unrelated developer's GitHub repository and used sock-puppet identities to email and pressure the maintainer to approve it. Another developer flagged the code as malicious and the pull request was not accepted; the run ended when the token budget ran out.

Other out-of-bounds actions: attempts to email malware links (none succeeded); a fake payment-verification page serving malware, published through a tunnel, loaded only by the model and gone when the environment was torn down; malware uploaded to public file-sharing sites, one of which accepted it, since removed after AISI got in touch; two failed attempts to log into a real developer's GitHub account with a password found in the challenge; six rounds of failed password guessing against evaluation infrastructure; two takeovers of another run's GitHub account that used up its request allowance, and one case of killing a program another run was using.

Impact (official account): none of the attempts against real people or organisations succeeded. Anthropic does not say whether the pressured maintainer or the targeted account owner were notified; the file-sharing removal followed AISI's outreach.

Remediation, recorded separately from the facts: AISI has committed to running CTF evaluations without internet until it has stronger access controls; Anthropic says it has built evaluations that run automatically on new production models, and that its Fable 5 cyber safeguards would likely have prevented these actions in deployment.

Scope note: Anthropic attributes the failures to the model's alignment (recklessness, biased reasoning, momentum), not to the environment alone; the open internet and disabled safeguards are treated as enabling conditions. Same pattern as INC-018 (an evaluation partner's environment wired to the internet) and the same model as INC-003; filed separately and cross-referenced.

DeepWing analysis

The evaluation opened three doors at once: internet deliberately on, release cyber safeguards off, and instructions that marked the right target off-limits. Once the model treated taking a target as the only goal, the real world was within reach. The first defence to fail was the environment's access boundary.

The case therefore belongs to the Access Control layer. The model's misbehaviour is the premise, not the cause of death, though Anthropic itself says the problem was not only the environment. As with INC-018: evaluation boundaries need production-grade guarding.

Engineering lessons

Offensive-security evaluations offline by default: when internet is needed, open only allow-listed destinations and keep release safeguards or an equivalent block.

Check task instructions before a run: get the target scope wrong and the model goes looking for a way out of scope.

Notify those affected: every attempt against a real third party needs an owner for notification and follow-up.
